How I Survived Detox On A Raw Food Diet Plan

Raw Food Detox Diet – Day 1

David Wolfe

In this series I’m planning to report my first 30 days of raw food detox diet, my experiences and thoughts. I will post it daily for more detailed posts. So here you go.

In the morning I got UPS with my superfoods package! I got very excited and opened all the packages right away. Here is what I ordered:

  • Spirulina from Hawaiian 100g
  • Chlorella Algae  from China 250g
  • Wheatgrass from China 500g
  • Coconut oil virgin raw 200g
  • Maca from Peru 250g
  • Goji berries from China 250g
  • Cacao beans from Peru 250g

That’s all costed me around $100. It’s a good idea to separate each superfood to a separate jar and name it for further reference. Good and secure storage is important. Check for temperatures requirements for each superfood as it may vary. Also, wherever you ordered such products, you should receive information about how often and how much you can it a day. In most cases you will be able to take 1,2 tablespoons 1-3 times a day. Superfoods may not taste the best but they are perfect when you make a vegetable juice or a fruit smoothie. They are advocated by many raw food experts because they contain a lot of crucial amino acids and minerals that help to absorb all the proteins and other nutrients you take.

I smelled and tasted each superfood and here is my first impression.

Spirulina smells really… bad :P It’s really dark green and very dusty. Use it in moderation as it can change the taste of your smoothie quite significantly.

Chlorella Algae similar to the previous. Very ‘earth’ smell.

Wheatgrass has quite moderate taste and smell. Definitely I ordered too much for the first time – 500g. 250g would be fair enough if you are just beginning. You need to mix it with water, like 1 ounce water and 1-2 tablespoons of wheatgrass.
Now, the taste is not the best but for detox and cleanse it’s the best thing! Mix it with blended apples or oranges for better taste. Also make smaller smoothies to drink it faster. Some people call it a wheatgrass shot as it’s a good idea to drink it all at once.

Coconut oil has a really delicate smell and taste. I read that it can be used for cooking, baking and frying. It’s great for a bread too, instead of butter. It can be also used for smoothies as it’s a great source of vegetable fat.

Maca is made from a root of some plant in Peru. It has a light brown color with specific smell. There are many benefits of this superfood like better organism regeneration and anti-agining effects. Again, perfect for any kind of vegetable juices.

Goji berries are very small, dried fruits. The taste is pretty good, nothing fancy. Perfect for smoothies and snacks. Goji berries have an amazing amount of antioxidants, over 10x more than blueberries! If you are looking for better skin and hair, anti-aging, that’s a superfood for you!

Cacao beans are very interesting superfoods. It tastes like a bitter chocolate. It has an amazing amount of antioxidants (even more than goji berries) and it’s one of the most complex food there is. That’s the main source of every chocolate. If you love chocolates, you will love real, natural and organic cacao beans. They can be used in fruit smoothies to change the taste and as a snack.

Now, I’m using all-raw diet suggested by David Wolfe in his book “The Sunfood Diet Success System”. It’s a weekly diet that contains 4 meals every day. I will start from this to find out the favorite recipes and customize my diet later on.

So here is what I had in the afternoon:

Blended super smoothie:

  • apple
  • strawberries
  • half of orange
  • spirulina 2 tablespoons
  • chlorella algae 2 tablespoons
  • coconut oil 2 tablespoons
  • cup of water

The smoothies was very green with some white dots (coconut oil), not the best looking :) The taste was not as bad as it looked. Berries and apple definitely reduced the intense taste of chlorella and spirulina. It took me quite some time to drink it all. Now I may try to add more water like 1 and 1/2 cup and more fruits for a better taste. I may also reduce the amount of superfoods because I thought it’s a bit too much. Other than that it’s a very good, powerful smoothie for the beginning of the day.

The next one in the middle of the day:

1 Shot of wheatgrass juice

I put 2 tablespoons of wheatgrass and around 1/3 cup of water. Now the taste was not the best. It’s better to drink it in one time. I may try to experiment in adding some apple, orange, grapefruit juice and mix it all together.

Sandwich made with dehydrated flax crackers, avocado, clover sprouts, sliced tomato, diced zucchini and red onion

I didn’t have flax crackers so I just ate it in a bowl as a salad. I’m not used of eating such salads so the taste was average.

2 grapefruits smoothie

It’s one of my favorite. Really refreshing and great for summer. Energy booster too. For less bitter taste try red grapefruits or oranges.

3 sticks of celery

I never ate celery before and I must say it has a very intense, ‘grassy’ taste. I could eat just 2 sticks as they were really long. Celery is great for smoothies too and it has a lot of detox effects. Not one of my favorite in a case of taste.

The last one was dinner:

One large lettuce, cucumber, tomato, clover sprout and green onion salad with one handful of raw sunflower seeds, two avocados and a fresh-squeezed lemon

I diced avocados too in small squares and ate in a separate bowl. I added a bit too much of lettuce and couldn’t eat it all. I was quite hungry but I discovered that you can really feel full eating just salad. I discovered that avocado is perfect for it. Avocado is a very interesting fruit, fat fruit. It’s one of the healthiest and natural sources of fat that you need. All in all, this meal tasted pretty average. Quite bitter in my opinion and I craved for some salt or sauce for it that I used to get. Hope my tastes will change after time. I mean it wasn’t that bad, just different. I will have to get used to the taste of avocado too.

So that’s it. Because I started eating a bit later this day I ate only 3 meals. Pretty excited about this raw food detox diet and looking forward for the next day.

  • Everyone keeps talking about detoxifying the body but what does that actually
mean. If you stop eating toxins will start to build up in your body. The right
way of getting rid of these toxins is to eat whole grain, unprocessed, fresh
foods. Eat organic fruits, meats and vegetables and you'll be a lot better off
than doing a rediculous detoxifying diet.

  • I've seen a lot about the raw food diet, but other than avoiding overly
processed foods, I'm not sure why it's so beneficial? It also seems like
a lot of effort for people, and it looks like it's difficult to create
meals that are satisfying and leave one feeling full. In essence, why go
    raw?
